Saturday 14-12 - Going Home

Up early so that we can catch the shuttle to the terminal. Shuttle ends up being pretty full. We get to QANTAS and there is a log queue. The Jetstar flight has been cancelled and people are trying to swap to the QANTAS flight. But no hassles for us. Checked in, then through security. Nothing moves fast in Hawaii, but we have plenty of time. So that is it for another trip. Had a great time, saw lots of things and had a bit of relaxation time as well. Hope you enjoyed.

Friday 13-12 - Molokai to Oahu

We are starting to head home. Check out is 10am, brunch is at 10:30am, drive around town and then off to the airport as we have nothing much else to do. We have some time at the one shop airport before our flight. Bye bye Molokai, hello Honolulu airport and hotel. Tomorrow is our flight home. Great time has been had in Hawaii.

Thursday 12-12 - Washing and Leisure

Image
Nothing specific today as far as sight seeing is concerned. Down to town for breakfast and then catching up on photos, blog, washing, reading, crab pictures, etc. This is a relaxation day on Molokai. And our last sunset. Crab Crab Sunset on Molokai Our last sunset for Hawaii

Wednesday 11-12 - North and West on Molokai

Today we travel in the other direction with more scenic stops plus some information gathering about Molokai. Our first stop is a coconut grove planted in the 1860s by King Kamehameha V, still a sacred spot but with falling coconuts and dead trees, not the place to allow wandering tourists. Opposite is what has been termed Church Grove. As the island was a beacon for the missionaries, 7 churches have been built side by side. Some are quaint, others modern and some the congregation small as they could do with some maintenance. The Molokai Museum and Cultural Centre has a photo exhibition of the last occupants of Kalaupapa, a historic display to record the final days of the colony as leprosy has now been cured. These people have all been cured, but as they were taken from their families and homes, some at a very early age they have stayed at the colony as it is the only home they know. We learned that some of the people taken over the years were just whisked away without any...

Tuesday 10-12 - South Coast heading East on Molokai

Image
We have breakfast and then set off for the east end of the island. The road curves around the south coast shore showing us beaches and rocky outcrops. It is a windy road nearing the end with some one lane areas. We stop at a couple of churches, one built by Father Damien, who administered to the people sent to Kalaupapa (the leprosy colony) during the 1800s and early 1900s. Father Damian was later canonised. Another stop is the marker for where the first Pacific Ocean flight landed; even if they did so upside down as they ran out of fuel! Ernie Smith and Emory Bronte did this in the same year, 1927 as Charles Lindbergh did his solo flight across the Atlantic. They took 25 hours and 2 minutes to make the crossing and were very lucky to survive. At the end of the road is Halawa Beach and the start of Halawa Valley. At the end of the valley is the 250-foot Mooula Falls, a good 2 mile hike away but we get a view from the road. The beach is a pleasant place to stop but very rough, so ...

Monday 9-12 - Mahalo Maui, Aloha Molokai

Image
We're island hopping today. We farewell Maui with its diverse scenery of thick, almost jungle like vegetation to desert slopes, of black sand beaches and high rolling surfing waves. We greet Molokai (via Honolulu) with its one major road east and west and one major town. We pick up our new car, a Chevy Malibu, named Boo. Our digs face West so we have a glorious sunset. New adventures tomorrow. Bye bye Maui Bye bye Maui Sunset on Molokai Sunset on Molokai Sunset on Molokai Sunset on Molokai

Sunday 8-12 - Back to where we started on Maui

Image
This morning we have a walk around Lahaina. It is a historic town and one of America's designated Main Street towns, the main shops all being along Front Street which hugs the bay. There was a fire in 1919 which did a lot of damage so most of the buildings date from them. It has a nice feel about it and views across the bay to Lanai and Moloka‘i. After our walk we make our way back to Silva, (our Nissan Sentra) and continue our loop drive of the north-western side of the island. There is a definite change of scenery when we get to the resorts; golf courses, up-market shops, gated communities, entry statements galore. Then we are back out in the country. Some spots the surfers are out in force catching some nice waves. The road is narrow in some spots but our trusty driver Mr. Davis does a good job in the convoy of cars. We get some great coastal views as well as the odd green valley view. We arrive at Kahului for the evening. A cruise ship sits across the way from us. We enjo...
