Tuesday 10-12 - South Coast heading East on Molokai

We have breakfast and then set off for the east end of the island. The road curves around the south coast shore showing us beaches and rocky outcrops. It is a windy road nearing the end with some one lane areas.

We stop at a couple of churches, one built by Father Damien, who administered to the people sent to Kalaupapa (the leprosy colony) during the 1800s and early 1900s. Father Damian was later canonised.

Another stop is the marker for where the first Pacific Ocean flight landed; even if they did so upside down as they ran out of fuel! Ernie Smith and Emory Bronte did this in the same year, 1927 as Charles Lindbergh did his solo flight across the Atlantic. They took 25 hours and 2 minutes to make the crossing and were very lucky to survive.

At the end of the road is Halawa Beach and the start of Halawa Valley. At the end of the valley is the 250-foot Mooula Falls, a good 2 mile hike away but we get a view from the road. The beach is a pleasant place to stop but very rough, so not a good swimming hole.

Lunch is on the way back at a counter store, and picnic tables. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure before a great sunset and the a short drive to dinner at Paddlers Inn Restaurant and Bar.
