After a night in Hana listening to the waves and the rain, we set off to finish our "outback" tour. The overnight rain has ensured that our waterfalls will be at their best.
We head south and then south west as we pass beaches with rolling waves then turn inward to cross numerous one lane bridges, each with gushing water and water falls of various sizes. The best is Wailua Falls. We stop to see the grave of Charles Lindberg the pioneering aviator in a remote little church.
The road deteriorates from a pot holed asphalt "just get 2 cars past" type to a rocky "cling to the mountain side, only 1 car at a time thank you" type. We only have to retreat once when a car was coming down a slope, so with a little help from a car in front for some of the way and patience, the narrow parts of the road are negotiated successfully with a couple of stops at the end for gulches. The rain shadow of this extinct volcano is amazing as we very quickly pass from lush green and wet vegetation to dry, rocky land. And the road widens, becomes 2 lanes and is a nice drive. Well done again to Mr. Davis and his trusty jeep, Jerry.
The coast is lava based of course, with an arch and steep slopes down to the waves of the Pacific. It is windy so we can spy wind farms. Our day ends at Kihei with a goodbye to Jerry jeep, and now a car to ferry us around for the rest of the week. A beer over looking the beach as the sunsets, is a great way to end the day.
