Saturday 7-12 - Lana'i (another island)
Today we are touring our 5th island of Hawaii, the lovely island of Lana'i.
We head over on the ferry, the last remaining passenger ferry between the islands. We pick up our tour at the ferry terminal and visit the following sites:
- Kaunolu Village - the summer palace of King Kamehameha I after he had united the Hawaiian islands
- Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods) - an area created during a lava flow where boulders were created as part of the eruption - lava bombs
- Kaiolohia (Shipwreck Beach) - the beach has been known for centuries for the shipwrecks which have occurred on the reefs
- Lanai Petroglyphs - a small selection of petroglyphs
- Lana'i City - we have lunch in the small town
- Lana'i Cat Sanctuary - a home for the hundreds of feral and abandoned pussy cats that had plagued the island
Lana'i has had a very checkered past. During one period its entire population was wiped out when the king from neighbouring Maui conquered the island. The king also burnt all trees on the island so changed the whole environment in a very short time. One area of regrowth, some 250 years later is said to be haunted by the cries of the slaughtered people.
Lana'i is not that big but we were able to see a lot of it in the short time, along with some deer, turkeys and pheasants. A great day.
